I've tried finding the perfect chocolate avocado mousse recipe for years, but each one I tried never tasted the way I wanted it to. I've been on a health kick the past few weeks but still have dessert cravings, so I decided to give chocolate avocado mousse another chance. After messing around with ingredients and hours of sub-par mousse tastings, I finally stumbled on a recipe that I absolutely love! Benefits of Avocado

So why should you make a mousse with avocados? Avocados are filled with tons of nutrients and fats that are actually good for us. According to The Medical News Today, avocados can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels to keep your heart in good condition, antioxidants that help with vision, vitamin K for healthy bones, and a high level of folate which can help reduce the risk of depression. Apparently, avocados have it all! 

Some people stay away from avocados because they think they are too fatty. But, although they are made up of mostly fat, they are the good kind of fat! Unfortunately, the word fat has become associated with the meaning obesity in our society. The truth is, there are two groups of fats: the good or 'unsaturated' fat, and the bad, or 'saturated' fat. Avocados fall in the 'unsaturated' fats category, providing you with good Omega-3 fats that are potentially able to help with heart help like I mentioned above. Our bodies and brains need the good kind of fat to function properly. This recipe is a great way to whip up something that tastes good and also has nutritional value and health benefits. And the best part is, you can hardly taste the avocado - they just add texture. 

The Secret Ingredient!

After testing out so many avocado mousse recipes, I thought they all tasted the same. It was like they were wanna-be desserts that didn't quite satisfy the sweet tooth. However, after messing around with a few tweaks (and creating a huge mess), I found the secret ingredient to an avocado mousse recipe that I actually enjoy. Banana! Bananas are naturally sweet, so they help lighten up the flavor of the dense pudding. 


Easy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

  • 2 avocados (make sure they are ripe)
  • 1 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup of almond milk
  • 2 tsp of vanilla
  • 1/2 or 1 ripe banana (the more ripe the better)
  • a pinch of salt
  • 6 tbsp of honey or maple syrup
  • Toppings! Whatever you’d like, but I ususally use chocolate chips, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, coconut and cacao
  1. Add all of the ingredients to a food processor or blender and mix until completely combined. Two ingredients that you can play with are the milk and the honey. If you'd like a thicker pudding, add less milk. If you'd like your pudding sweeter, add more honey!
  2. Chill for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  3. Add your favorite toppings. 
  4. Enjoy!

I find that avocado mousse is the perfect substitute for an ice cream or frozen yogurt craving after dinner. You can even freeze your mousse and eat it cold!  It's a filling snack and tastes rich and creamy. If you're a dark chocolate fan, you'll especially love this recipe. If you enjoy things a little sweeter, just add a little bit more honey.
