6 Cheesy Travel Quotes that are actually True

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for motivational quotes. I recently booked a trip to travel through Southeast Asia with my best friend, and one of the first things I did when preparing for the adventure was look up the best inspirational travel quotes. A month later, 8 cities and 4 countries later, I’ve realized that some of the cheesiest quotes are actually accurate . Here are six inspirational travel quotes that ring true.

1. "The journey is the destination.” ― Dan Eldon

The adventures you can’t plan for are usually the best. Traveling isn’t just about arriving at a city and seeing all of the major sites, but more about the in-between. My friend and I ended up going to an incredible carnival in a small town in the Southern part of Laos because we happened to be in the right place at the right time, it couldn’t have been planned. We learned to say “yes” to more. Figuring out how to ask locals for directions or stumbling upon hidden markets - these make the journey rich.

2. “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

When you’re traveling with a small backpack, or thousands of miles away from loved ones, it suddenly dawns on you what you truly care about. Traveling can help you realize what you’re taking for granted in your daily life.

3. “Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

Booking tickets or finding places to stay is discouraging when you look at your balance and see it draining. However, the memories you make, the places you see and adventures you go on will change you in unexpected ways.

4. “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” - Aristotle

I learned an incredible amount while traveling, but the more people we met and places we visited, I discovered how much knowledge I lacked. One of the best things about traveling is the conversation with new people who show you a different perspective on a topic or a new opinion you’ve never thought about.

5. “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

One of my favorite parts of traveling is wandering. In Bangkok, we ended up in a local market where they were giving out free food to mourn the king. The locals encouraged us to mourn with them, sharing their food. It was an unforgettable experience and the kindness of the people sticks with me today. You stumble upon cool restaurants, meet unexpected friends and catch a glimpse into the everyday life of a city.

6. “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

Sometimes the hardest part of taking a trip is making the decision to actually go. It can be scary to leave routine and explore the unknown. Plus, there are so many excuses not to take a trip including money, time, etc. But the truth is, the excuses will always be there. Take the first step today and plan a trip, the rest of the journey will amaze you.

It’s difficult to capture the emotions and lessons that traveling give. Some of these inspirational quotes are actually true no matter how cheesy they sound.
